Malta to Renew the Individual Investor Program

Written by: Bridgewest

Malta is known as an appealing jurisdiction for foreign investors who can relocate here through the several investor programs launched by the government over the years. Malta’s initiatives are so appreciated they have brought the country the first place in terms of Global Residency and Citizenship Programs at world level. This is one of the reasons for which the authorities have launched the Individual Investor Program which is now coming to an end. Our lawyers in Malta can explain the conditions of the Individual Investor Scheme.

The new Maltese Individual Investor Program

The impositions of the Individual Investor Scheme are not strict which is why the number of foreign citizens relocating to Malta through it has increased considerably. The conditions to be accepted are:

  • -          the applicant’s age which must be at least 18;
  • -          the applicant must purchase a property worth at least 350,000 euros or rent a property with a lease value of minimum 16,000 euros per year;
  • -          the property must be held or leased for a minimum period of 5 years;
  • -          the applicant must invest in stock, debentures, or other financial instruments for at least 5 years.

Investors are also allowed to open special purpose vehicles or make other investments worth a minimum of 150,000 euros.

The Maltese government wants to renew the program

As mentioned in the beginning, the Individual Investor Program is reaching its final phase at the end of 2017, however the great success and the large number of investments it has brought has determined the Prime Minister to say that the government is considering renewing the scheme, but under more specific and exclusive requirements.

The Maltese government is even considering using new technology in order to assess applications. Also, given the fact that more and more countries are setting up similar citizenship programs, it would be a good thing for governments to cooperate and share policies and practices which will lead to the creation of an ecosystem for countries with such programs. Due diligence through blockchain technology would also be possible if governments have a better cooperation.
